Setup has detected an incompatible version of Windows

When you’re installing certain programs on Windows 10 you may receive certain error messages like “setup has detected an incompatible version of windows”. Possible solutions.

The Issue

Windows 10 has problems with very old programs but also with programs that require new drivers to run properly like firewalls or certain resource-hungry applications including firewalls.

Whenever you run into such a problem and the installer detects an incompatible version you should first check whether you have downloaded the correct version for your operating system. This can be as simple as checking whether you are on Windows 10 32-bit or 64-bit

Workarounds

Some workarounds to run incompatible programs on Windows 10:

  • Try compatibility mode
  • Install VirtualPC or VirtualBox
  • For old games, try DOSBOX
  • Install an older version of Windows on a second hard or hard drive partition like D:, E: etc

There are many workarounds, e.g. finding alternative programs that may do a better job anyway. Experiment a little and don’t fear that you’re breaking something. It’s not so easy to break Windows and when you do, you can always come here!
